Why everybody is moving to Portugal

Why everybody is moving to Portugal

 Living in Portugal

The country’s popularity keeps growing every year! Here are 10 reasons to live and invest in Portugal...

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal was one of the world's most powerful countries, having opened Europe to the World. But today you need more than ambition to sail the tumultuous waters of global competition.

Portugal has reinvented itself throughout history adjusting its sails to the winds of changing times. But what makes a small country like Portugal so popular on the international scene?

Here are 10 reasons why everybody is moving to Portugal:

1. Foodies love Portugal – and so will your stomach

Life in Portugal is a love affair with your taste buds and there are many Michelin stars chefs and international prizes to prove it! From delicious food and pastries to exquisite wines and cheese, Portugal’s terroir and culinary traditions are renowned worldwide. And it’s not just five-star restaurants and renowned chefs that grant a memorable dining experience! Even at the most modern “tasca” you’ll be presented with a feast for your eyes and the stomach.

2. Great weather and plenty of fun in the sun

Portugal is one of the sunniest places in the world, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year! Here you'll find a great climate with mild temperatures all seasons. The southern region of Portugal is the warmest, but even the hottest summers are cooled by the Atlantic breeze. In the winter there are plenty of sun-filled days to keep you warm and cheerful. Portugal is also renowned for its spectacular coastline and beautiful beaches. Whether you prefer lying in the sun or practising water sports, there are lots to see and do. The waves of Praia do Norte in Nazare are amongst the most famous in the world, thanks to Garrett McNamara who surfed a record-breaking giant wave of 78 feet (23.8 m) in November 2011.

3. Rapidly growing tech scene

One of the biggest technology conferences in the world (Web Summit) has been hosted in Portugal since 2016. Tech giants such as Google have also chosen Portugal to build their international services centre and residency programs have specially designed for foreign start-ups. It’s no wonder that tech start-ups are growing twice as fast in Lisbon as the European average.

4. Arts, Culture and Architecture

Portuguese art, culture and architecture are renowned worldwide for its beauty and authenticity. From traditional Fado music to beautiful monuments all across the country, Portugal offers a diverse variety of historical sites to visit. But there are also plenty of museums, festivals, concerts and international exhibitions all year round!

5. Blooming economy

Portugal is seen as a model in the Euro area after the 2011–14 international bailout and the intense austerity policy that followed. The country has since successfully reformed its economy to be more competitive, with exports growing faster than the Euro area average. There has also been an increasing demand for property for sale in Portugal.

6. Public healthcare system

Portugal's public health system is considered one of the best in the world. Public health centres and hospitals are available to all residents and EU citizens for a very low cost. Children, pregnant women, seniors and people with chronic illness such as diabetes have free access to healthcare. Portugal considers access to healthcare to be a constitutional right... and that makes all the difference.

7. Forefront of liberal policies

Despite having a large majority of Catholics, Portugal is very liberal in regard to human rights. The country is one of the few to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and in 2010 became the 8th in the world to recognise same-sex marriage. Portugal is also an example in regard to drug legislation, having seen dramatic drops in overdoses, HIV infection and drug-related crime since 2001.

8. Green Economy for a sustainable future

Portugal is also a world leader when it comes to environmental issues. Around 70 percent of the country’s energy comes from renewable sources. The Portuguese Government is currently implementing various policies aiming at a more efficient, low carbon and environmentally-friendly economy. Innovative projects include a floating wind farm and electric cars are becoming more and more popular.

9. Friendly people and a safe environment

Portugal is one of the safest and friendliest countries in the world! If you've been to Portugal you probably noticed that most of the population speaks English and sometimes one or two other languages. Speaking different languages comes naturally for the Portuguese because TV programs are transmitted in their original language and children start learning English in primary school. But other factors also explain the Portuguese's ease and willingness to communicate with foreigners; history allowed this nation to have contact with different cultures and languages for centuries and the Portuguese are known for their hospitality and tolerance of different nationalities and religions. That may also explain the reason why refugees are so well accepted in the country and there have never been problems with regard to terrorism.

10. Wonderful lifestyle, at affordable prices

The quality of life in Portugal is also one of the best in the world although the general cost of living is surprisingly low. Various surveys place Portugal in the top ten countries with the best quality of life in regard to ease of settling in, working abroad, family life, and personal finance. The real estate market is also very attractive for expats, with great opportunities for investment and one of Europe’s highest rental returns. The NHR income tax system is another reason why so many foreigners consider Portugal a great investment for their future.
