It´s not only the spectacular weather throughout the year that attracts hundreds of tourists to the Algarve, Portugal. Throughout 2018, top chefs have been taking the traditional flavours and favourites of Portuguese food and creating artistic food that has seen a few more eateries reach Michelin star status.

Portuguese cuisine is traditionally very hearty, and the influence of the Atlantic has had a large impact in the quantity of fresh fish available daily throughout the Algarve. Whether you travel throughout the East or West Coast of the Algarve Portugal you will always stumble across a small fishing village. The small bays are afloat with colourful fishing vessels with fisherman mending their nets and getting themselves ready for the next catch of the day.

If you are not travelling on a budget, why not indulge yourself with a gastronomic treat at one of these highly recommended Michelin star restaurants within the Algarve.  If you enjoy five-star fine dining, then any one of these fabulous restaurants offers a culinary experience that will become a lifelong memory and be synonymous with your Algarve experience.

Gusto by Heinz Beck is one of two new one-star restaurants that was awarded Michelin star status during 2018. Located in the five-star Conrad Algarve Hotel in Quinta do Lago, Almancil within the Algarve´s Golden Triangle. Offering classic Mediterranean cuisine blends with modern flair. The restaurant has a lively vibe, open kitchen and offers a Cuban cigar menu with a wonderful alfresco terrace with views over the Infinity pool and the beautiful Algarvian countryside.

Willies Restaurant: located in Vilamoura offers “a one-Michelin star dining experience within a relaxed atmosphere”. This intimate restaurant located in a tranquil location within Vilamoura and was one of the first gourmet restaurants to be awarded a Michelin star in the Algarve. The refined gourmet dishes and attention to detail make for a wonderful dining experience especially when the Chef takes the time to come and chat to the diners during the evening.

Vila Joya: one of my personal favourite Michelin star restaurants in the Algarve, not only for its highly acclaimed food but also for it´s location. Perched on the cliff tops of Gale, Albufeira this Boutique Hotel & Michelin star restaurant with its Moorish architecture is a must to visit and a “pearl in an oyster”. It´s restaurant offers a Chef´s Table experience like no other combing gastronomic flavours that tantalize the taste buds. It´s wine cellar boasts some 12000 bottles of wine from Portugal and around the world. It is truly a sublime gastronomical experience and a must when you are not too worried about your budget.

Restaurant Ocean: this two-star Michelin restaurant can be found in the five-star Vila Vita Parc Resort and Spa in Porches. Porches can be found on the oldest road that takes you from the East to West of the Algarve, N125. The décor, presentation and views add to a fine dining experience with elegance and sophistication. Austrian Chef Hans Neuner is the mastermind behind the culinary journey. With a mix of Atlantic´s flavours and European influence the Chef manages to combine a unique take on traditional favourites like Chicken Piri-Piri or exotic recipes such as Imperial Pigeon and Foie Gras.

Henrique Leis: is a restaurant of excellence, awarded with a Michelin star and located between Loule & Almancil in Vale Framoso. This stunning restaurant offers two dining areas. One for winter decorated with warm colours & a large fireplace and the other for summer with fresh colour tones that extends onto a beautiful terrace with spectacular views of the Atlantic. Throughout this contemporary Restaurant you can find art work created by the Chef himself, Henrique Leis. The highly acclaimed Chef started this very restaurant in 1993 and was awarded his first star in 2000 and has maintained the high levels of cuisine since. If you are looking for a venue that offers intimacy whilst dining, then this is the place to go.

Reservations are an absolute necessity at all these restaurants. Also check for opening and closing times during the week & weekends and all bookings can also be directly on their sites. Note: most of the restaurants are closed from 1st January until mid-February.
